Ramune, a carbonated drink in a transparent glass bottle sealed with a marble, is a classic symbol of summer in Japan and is often sold at festival stalls.

Ramune was introduced to Japan in 1853 when Commodore Perry arrived in Uraga aboard the Black Ships.

At that time, because opening a bottle of Ramune made a "pon" sound, it was called "Pon-water."
